Sad and nasty indeed. But it seems it is “by design” or done for “Delphi compatibility”. It would be interesting to know what Delphi developers think of this. You should post the new code example and message to a Delphi newsgroup or Google+ forum and see what they think of that. If it has been around since the D7 days (and maybe even earlier), they might have an explanation or work-around for you.
