Indy does provide support for threading (as does AsyncPro, the Socket flavor of which could be of interest here). But I don't know if it's easy to use Indy with Lazarus, and I know that there is no Lazarus port for AsyncPro yet (even though it is open Source and especially the COM-Port flavor is requested rather often).
