It is modular, so it suppors writing various versions of MS Office XLS and even experimental ODS and xlsx, althougth I don't recommend those. I think that Excel 5.0 was with the best support. Download the latest source code from subversion (link in the wiki). Unfortunatelly I haven't yet had time to update the wiki page documenting how to use it, but take a look at the examples that come with it.
