Interpreters are nice and can be handy. Somehow, people (and big corporations) have managed to turn them into multi megabyte monsters. CLISP, OCaml, Lua, GNU Smalltalk all have nice, small and reasonably fast VMs. IIRC, atleast one popular Pascal compiler targetted a VM (pcode?).
