I find that runtime increases significantly as the paths get longer, so I think it's safe to assume that the make operation is I/O-bound. In this case I don't think that increasing the number of jobs (e.g. to be the same as the number of CPUs) would help significantly, at least in part since this would reduce the amount of memory available for file caching.
