Hi Erik, I understand what you say and I'm trying to give you and others as many information as possible and to respond to questions about GIT to help get most of us up and running with GBM and GIT, and proposing ways to overcome the difficulties in Apache INFRA while we get full git support.
I must to say that I'm not an expert on GIT since I was a SVN user and switch to GIT three or four months ago. At work we changed to GIT due to the seam needs we face today in Apache Flex project: We need to change deep changes in the core of a huge product in our company. Something that could not be done with our classic SVN development model. We switched to GBM and GIT with success. So, please, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to respond to your question in order to solve the problems you face. I'll recomend you to enter github, make an account, make a fork from Apache Flex mirror repository and try to make some patch and propose a pull request of your change to PPMC.
