Technically, discussions are supposed to go into [DISCUSS] tags, but this will do for now.
Apache dosen't have the concept of a "beta", from what I can tell. The current trunk is where the work goes, and people who want the "bleeding-edge" release can grab it from there. Based on the versions numbers, some projects have "stable" releases, and, I guess "normal" releases. 4.8.0 is a normal release. As we introduce patches and bug fixes, then we could increment to 4.8.1, 4.8.2, etc. We could also be working towards 4.9.0 when we introduce additional features. If there are any stopping bugs that you find, you should vote a -1 in the VOTE thread. This will stop that release from being cut, and give you time to submit the patch (or identify the problem), so that we can cut a 4.8.0. Remember, the release numbers are just a point in time for the SVN.
