the only problem is that Nikon's scanning software is quite aggressive on the
white points/black points and loves to make things super-contrasty, despite
what I've set in its preferences for black/white points of 0.01% each.

For some reason VueScan manages to get less contrasty results with which I
can get better results via Photoshop. Wish though VS had a better inventory
of film profiles.
