I have seen a few cases where the original product has been literally made into a mold for a knock-off. And in other cases, it appears an off shore company has bought or otherwise acquired the old molds or dies from a product, probably after the original manufacturer feels they are beyond their quality specifications. I've read CD dies are bought from major manufacturers for off-brand product after they are considered too worn for use.
