I agree, in my case scanning B&W negatives 6x6 and up has not been an issue. I'm just using MagicScan "straight", and the Piezo prints after a little bit of work in Photoshop are pretty nice.

I read that review (after my purchase fortunately), and could not disagree more. I just recently purchased a used Powerlook III from Ebay. One of the prime reasons was I wanted a full-page tranny adapter to do contact sheets of negatives. I've done about 15 so far and have had no problems scanning color negs. The scans are quite good. I will say that I usually get better results with Magicscan on manual rather than using the Binuscan option, at least with contacts. I usually use the black eyedropper on clear film base to set exposure. Perhaps Binuscan is fooled with all the "black" in a typical contact sheet. I also have Vuescan, but haven't tried it with this scanner yet. Based on my experience, I would have no problem recommending the Umax for color negs. I haven't been up close and personal to high-end Epson scanners, but my previous one was a perfection 1200S. The Umax is much more solidly built. It's an impressive machine. Giving that I shoot negatives, for various reasons, this quote from the review in the link below is enough to keep me away from the Umax: "The only real failure was in scanning color negatives". I also remember some review where the 2450 was judged better than the Umax, but can't find right now in my links...
