Aliasing products caused by grain size and distribution interfering(optically) with pixel size and distribution. Thanks for the info Tony , Bob and Mark - I'm using NS 3 and have checked that sharpening is turned off . Strangely enough I was about to try a roll of the new Portra 400 B&W which everyones going on about - will have to see how it scans.....
