Thanks for the GIMP tip, Erik. I've tried using GIMP (WinXP), but I guess I'm addicted to PS. In my hands the filters you mention in either one don't reduce those fine residual dust&scratches artifacts left after IR cleaning without unacceptable softening.
I posted my results with VS7.3.9 to this group because it seemed to have cured the IR cleaning problem it had with previous versions. In fact I thought VS did an excellent job with the Kodachrome in my example, as did NS's 'normal' ICE, but that NS was a little better, without significant softening. NS's 'fine' ICE cleans beautifully, but does soften significantly, though. Happy New Year! -- -szt Stephen Z. I think that both Vuescan and Digital ICE don't work very well with Kodachrome slides, which has also been stated many times. As far as I know Digital ICE softens the image, while Vuescan does not. So I'd suggest that applying som additional filter (dust and scratches) in Photoshop may help. I use GIMP (under Linux) mostly, which has a Despeckle filter which, according to my experince, is much superior to 'dust and scratches' in PhotoShop.
