I'm really lost as to what could be going wrong here. I even see -fPIC
pop-up on htop while the compile job is running.

Any idea how to pass fPIC or avoid having to do so?

PS: If you need the full config log and the configure command I can
attach them. They're quite long.
you should post such informations unasked and there is no need for attachments - just echo LDFLAGS/CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS, the configure-line and the output of the make process

it's hardly megabytes big and we have scrollbars and mouse-wheels no matter if it's in the mail client or i need to start an external application
