In the words of Poynton (IIRC) the only reason to convert rgb to yuv is
to enable sub-sampling (though I guess it may be better supported than
if you actually encoded as rgb  with libx264rgb)


In theory I can see that. In practice - neither vimeo nor youtube understand libx264rgb at upload time, left alone being able to deliver it to the end user.

OTOH while 444p is not widely supported, it is part of the standard for 11 years... Not sure if that means much in practice though.
