A timeout is a duration of time before giving up: AV_OPT_TYPE_DURATION, there is no doubt about it. OTOH, you need to fix the max value. I have this patch in my inbox, I intend to review it again sometime, but sorry, it is not very high in my priority list. If somebody else wants to take over, I have absolutely no objection.
