They aren't really accelerated - they are just hardware, there is no 
acceleration.

I guess I am confused about the semantics: the typical v4l2 IP blocks provide acceleration in the sense that there is hardware to offload the computation away from the CPU cores.
if that is not it, what does acceleration mean in the ffmpeg domain?
