As for the difference in behavior between mapping_family == -1 and mapping_family == 1, I wanted to preserve existing behavior for users who do not specify the new mapping_family command line argument. The code would be more simple if the default behavior were the same as the behavior when mapping_family==1 is specified explicitly.
