Doesn't both MSYS and Cygwin map Windows drive letters to UNIX paths? E.g. D: is at /d in MSYS. So if you use UNIX paths it's possible to create a relative path between two arbitrary locations. Anyway, if git master is currently broken and there's no easy and obvious fix available we should revert the original patch.
