I feel for you :). Yes, it's interesting. I think I support your main complaints about the current option system (no way to wrap other option systems, no lists, escape hell, etc.). I'm not sure I believe in "rewrite EVERYTHING!!!", but if someone else does the work I will obviously not object. I'm wondering if some of these features can simply be added as extensions of the current API (if ABI breakage was OK). For example, wrapping-through-introspection (which would probably also allow dynamic lists values) doesn't sound like it needs a complete rewrite, and would be super-useful...
