It's one of those things that are at least half broken, barely maintained, everyone dislikes, and many agree that they should be removed (or at least rewritten). But they are not removed or fixed anyway, because some devs are either emotionally attached to it, or have this strange ideology of never removing anything. The duplicated decoders/encoders/demuxers merged from Libav illustrate this nicely. Sure, call it flamebait, but this doesn't change that something is VERY WRONG here.
