I mostly agree to the general stance of this discussion about clean design for better maintainability, but since this precise point pops here: This particular issue could be avoided by not having an intra-library ABI, i.e. having a single library. I can understand the attraction of having different features in different libraries, thematically, but I feel that the practical result has way more drawbacks than benefits.
