Both GCC and MSVC let you in theory deprecate enumerators https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Enumerator-Attributes.html https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c8xdzzhh.aspx I tried the example shown there for GCC but it didn't work.
