If you look at the originators of the ivf format, they write a 32bit field at header_offset+24 called nb_frames, and an "unused" entry at header_offset+28. FFmpeg adds nothing at header_offset+24 and duration at header_offset+28. We essentially added that field, in the same way that we extended the y4m format, or support unofficial B-frames in AVI etc. You may not like it, neither do I, but these files exist, and I don't think we should break them.
