So, now we have somebody who wants to work on libavdevice, who uses it for application development, and who tells us that its API is quite fine. That's enough to make a decision: libavdevice is generally fine as it is for the foreseeable future and we can go ahead discussing the merits of this code. Regards, -- Nicolas George
