Logically - codecs, especially on the encoding/compression side, or filters.

In general, as a place to start, it could be anything where people feel processing is a little bit slow, does not rely too much on library calls (stdlib, etc.),
and where the serial / non-parallel algorithm is not too exotic.

If anything comes to mind - someone make a suggestion and I'll take a look at it.
