#28568 Reed Massengill, & Ken Furtado. (Ed. Dian Hanson)
QUAINTANCE. "The Flamboyant Life and Forbidden Art of George
Quaintance"
Taschen, Koln, 2010 1st edition

George Quaintance, 1902 to 1957, lived and worked during an era
when homosexuality was repressed and when his paintings and
physique photos could not depict a penis. In an era before the
Stonewall riots, the sexual revolution, gay rights, and the AIDS
crisis, Quaintance and his high-camp erotic art existed in a
demi-mode of legality. Half a century later the masculine fantasy
world created by Quaintance, populated by Greek Gods, Latin
lovers, lusty cowboys and chiseled ranch hands, retains its
seductive allure. His highly prized oil paintings numbered just
55. As the preeminent male physique artist of the 1940s and early
1950s, his work for the early gay titles 'Physique Pictorial',
'Demi Gods', and 'Body Beautiful' inspired a generation of artists

including Harry Bush, Etienne and Tom of Finland. Text by Reed
Massengill with a Commentary on the complete works by Ken Furtado.

Hugely well illustrated including 4 oversized fold-out plates.
English, French, & German text and captions.

#28554 Samuel Johnson
A DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
In Which The Words Are Deduced From Their Originals And
Illustrated In Their Different Significations By Examples From The

Best Writers. To Which Are Prefixed A History Of The Language And
An English Grammar.
2 volumes. A-K ('A' to 'Kyd') & L-Z ('Left-handedness' to
Zig-Zag'). Triple-column text.
John Jarvis, Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, 1786. Edition not given.

Modern binding, gilt on half leather, black over tan textured
rexine with new eps and trimmed edges.

A sound and attractive set of this seminal work by Dr Johnson. The

1786 Jarvis edition is relatively scarce and that may be the only
year in which it was so published. Specifically this edition does
not mention 'John Fielding' as the seller of copies printed by
John Jarvis of which such copies are clearly extant.

#28377 Sir Andries Stockenstrom. (Ed C.W. Hutton)
THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE LATE SIR ANDRIES STOCKENSTROM
Sometime Lieutenant Governor Of The Eastern Province Of The Colony

Of The Cape Of Good Hope. Volumes 1 and 2
Juta, Cape Town, 1887 1st edition. 2 volumes.

Sir Andries Stockenstrom (1792 –1864) was Lieutenant Governor of
British Kaffraria during the years 1836 to 1838. His efforts in
restraining colonists from moving into Xhosa lands served to make
him immensely unpopular among the settlers of the Cape Colony
frontier. As a historical figure, he long remained controversial
in South Africa for supposedly hindering colonisation, and
pro-imperialist histories traditionally vilified him. However his
far-sighted and respectful policies towards the Xhosa have
increasingly gained recognition in modern South Africa. On
Stockenstrom's legacy, historian Christopher Saunders concluded:
"No man in the 19th century Cape had greater breadth of vision,
none gained the respect of a wider constituency, black as well as
white".
