Shows how the common practice of reading can
illuminate the the social and political history of a
culture. This work reveals resistance strategies in
the reading and writing practice of South Africans.
By looking to records from a slave lodge, women's
      associations, army education units, universities,
courts, libraries, prison departments and political
groups, the author exposes the key works of fiction,
non-fiction, magazines and newspapers that were read
and discussed by political activists and prisoners.

used to regulate reading, he exposes incidences of

how South African readers used reading and books to
resist unjust regimes and build community across

Paints a predictably bleak picture & pulls no
punches on the reality of Africa's sorry state.
Already the poorest region of the world the Author
sees it falling further behind both in world terms
and even in respect of its own recent financial
history. With a disinterested West applauding but not
      supporting African betterment initiatives, lagging
behind in the delivery of their own promises of
assistance and aid, the cumulative effect of decades
of corrupt rule is perhaps a burden that Africa
      cannot overcome.

Stanley's biography takes us on a journey from his
destitute beginnings spent at a poorhouse in Wales,
to shores lined with slaves in Zanzibar, and onwards
through the wilds of the 'dark continent' and beyond.
Immortalised by his famous words "Dr Livingstone I
presume". These words overshadow his many other
achievements which this biography explores. First
published in 1844 this work includes nine chapters in
Stanley's own words forming his account of the early
and formative years , and written when his days of
adventure were over. This is followed by his
autobiography compiled from journals, notes, letters,
and a number of lectures he prepared on his various
explorations. Finally there are his letters to
acquaintances and friends as well as a selection
written to his beloved wife. Providing an insight
into his life this is also a study of human nature
and triumph in the face of the most difficult
hardships, all set against the backdrop of the
wilderness, the wildlife, and the extraordinary
tapestry of cultures found in 18thC East Africa.

Spanning the period in Rhodesia from white minority
rule to the emergence of an independent Zimbabwe, the
narrative chronicles the parallel transformation of
the feisty adolescent Tambu as her country struggles
to make the painful transition to nationhood. In the
suffocating atmosphere of The Young Ladies College Of
The Sacred Heart she encounters a system that
disparages her African village background. Stumbling
from one misfortune to another in a comedy of errors
      she must assert herself.

Kristin Uys is a tough Roodepoort magistrate who
lives alone with her cat and is on a one-woman
crusade to wipe out prostitution in the town. Unable
to convict the Visagie brothers on charges of running
a brothel, she manages to nail Stevo for contempt of
court and gives him a summary six-month sentence.
From Diepkloof Prison, the outraged Stevo
orchestrates his revenge against the magistrate,
aided and abetted by his rather inept brother Shortie
and his erstwhile nanny, Aunt Magda, who believes
mass action will force the powers that be to release
Stevo. Kristin receives menacing phone calls and her
home is invaded and vandalised. Even her cat is
threatened. The chief magistrate insists on assigning
a bodyguard to protect her. To Kristin’s
consternation, security guard Don Mateza moves into
her home and trails her everywhere. Nor does this
suit Don’s long-time girlfriend Tumi, former model
and successful businesswoman, who is intent on
turning Don into a Black Diamond sooner rather than
later. Don soon finds that his assignment has
unexpected complications which Tumi simply does not
understand. Zakes Mda tackles every conceivable South
African stereotype, turning them upside down and
exposing their ironies. A clever, quirky novel that
captures the essence of contemporary life and will
      resonate with all South Africans.

The tuxedo'd Whale Caller spends his days on the
cliffs of the small coastal town of Hermanus blowing
his kelp horn to the whales visiting in the summer
months. He blows for Sharisha a southern right whale
who always responds to his call. With each surfacing
of her giant head and each thrashing of her tail, the
Whale Caller's connection to Sharisha deepens. Then
Saluni enters his life, the feisty self destructive
woman who frequents the taverns and consorts with
passing sailors. She cannot understand or tolerate
his fixation with the whales and finds herself vying
with Sharisha for the Whale Caller's attention.
Builds to a devastating climax with terrible and
      lasting consequences.

Signed on title page by Author. There is bitter
rivalry between the Hlubi village below the Hill of
Fools and the Thembu village beyond the Xesi river.
Fights break our regularly. Zuziwe, a Hlubi girl, is
      engaged to Ntabeni, who is much older than she is;
Ntabeni is a prosperous farmer and a keen churchman
and has been accepted by her family as her future
husband. But she falls in love with Bhuqa, one of the
leading Thembu warriors. Her fiance tries to win her
back but in doing so provokes another fight between
the villages in which Zuziwe's brother is killed,
probably by her lover. She discovers she is going to
bear Bhuqa's child and from then onward the tragedy
develops with classical force and inevitability.
Randell Langa Peteni, 1915-2000, wrote this, his only
novel, which was later a regularly prescribed work in
school curricula. In spite of only writing this while
in his sixties, Peteni made a literary impact as the
author of South Africa's first regional novel in
English by a black writer. It also claims the spot
for the first novel in English by a Xhosa speaker.

He illustrated all the birds of prey, including the
owls, known in Southern Africa at the beginning of

have been discovered since that time. He depicted the

                            WEST AFRICA

#27810 Mikell, Gwendolyn. COCOA AND CHAOS IN GHANA. 284pp
illustrated softcover. No inscription. Cadbury library label ffep.
some marks to front wrap else a VG copy. Howard University Press
1992. isbn 9780882581538
                                                             £25.00
Contends that cocoa has been both a source of
wealth and chaos in Ghana and, as the cash nexus in
capitalist development, it became the pivot of
economic and political activity. The struggle to
control the resources from cocoa and the state's
inordinate dependence upon its revenues for national
development led to tensions at every level of
      society. Domestic gender tensions, lineage
      fragmentation, peasant/elite and ethnic/regional
antagonisms, and a state political economy that
became increasingly problematic for national elites
      to administer. Overall underdevelopment and
impoverishment were the outcomes of Ghana's
      dependence on cocoa.

#27811 Shillington, Kevin. GHANA AND THE RAWLINGS FACTOR. 184pp
illustrated softcover. No inscriptions. VG+ condition. Macmillan.
London 1992. isbn 9780333568408

Gerry John Rawlings was a man arousing intense
emotions in both opponents and admirers. This is the
story of the 1979 and 1981 revolutions led by him,
tracing the history of the turbulent years after the
1981 revolution and assessing its triumphs and
failures. As Ghana heads towards its Fourth Republic
it asks how real is the vaunted economic recovery to
the ordinary Ghanaian, and analyses the revolution's
attempts to evolve a 'true democracy' with Ghana once
more leading Africa into a new era of freedom and
      justice.

An attack on Elandslaagte Station in Natal prompted

"This is a diary I kept during the Boer's guerilla
war with England. In it I have faithfully, and to the
best of my skill, dealt with the vicissitudes and
trials of those of us who chose to follow to the end
our country's fortunes. The events were recorded at
the time, many of the notes being made in the saddle,

With Ladysmith weakening daily, Buller made a third
attempt to relieve the beleaguered town. Inspired by
his optimism, the British soldiers make an unusual
feint attack on the weakly held Boer position.
Although achieving a partial success, Buller failed
to capitalise on it and ultimately abandoned
