"Ouvrage illustre de 105 gravures et deux cartes". The 1895-1896
expedition was organised with Captain Alfred St. Hill Gibbons, Percy C.
Reid, M.F.-D Pirie and the Author. Their route took them from the Cape
via Kimberley, Mafeking, and the Makarikari pans to Kazoungoula and the
'Royaume Des ba-Rotsi' in what is now Zambia. They returned to the Cape
via Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Durban. This was the first of two
expeditions by St. Hill Gibbons to explore and map the upper basin and
central course of the Zambesi.

Includes 26 photographs by Ellerton Fry. Author joined the Pioneers in
1890 and was one of the few to write an account of his personal
experiences. In every line the thrill of adventure and the joy of
companionship shine through in this youthful account. Darter wrote this
however to persuade the British that the British South Africa Company's
Charter should be brought to an end as he believed that the Company had
forfeited its rights when it used force to invade Matableland in 1893.

assess conditions for missionary work by natives of his home Jamaica.
This relatively scarce British edition includes the illustration

railway construction workers were carried off from their tents at night
by lions which saw them as tasty and easy pickings. This classic East
African title deals with not only the man-eating lions, but the
construction of the Tsavo bridge, observations on hunting, Swahili &
Masai tribes, and life in East Africa in those times.

#25672 IN THE GRIP OF THE NYIKA Further Adventures In British East
Africa.

"In the subsequent pages I have endeavoured to give a plain account of
the trials and adventures which befell me on two recent expeditions
through the 'nyika', or wilderness, in British East Africa". Written
after 'The Man Eaters Of Tsavo' the opening chapter gives an account of
several previously unrecorded tales that occurred when building the
Uganda Railway.

Mashunaland And The Progress Of The Gold Industry In That Country.

From Czech: "In this work recounting eleven years of exploration, work
and sport in the 1880's and 1890's, Selous describes numerous
adventures with lions and leopards, particularly near the Zambezi,
Zweswi, and Manyami Rivers, with additional sport after rhinoceros,
eland and hartebeest. After returning to the Transvaal, he linked with
Montague Kerr and travelled into Matabeleland. Selous hunted more lions
and rhinoceros, and vividly depicts an elephant hunt near the Zweswi
River. In 1886, he hunted through Mashonaland, but was forced to escape
after his camp was destroyed by hostile tribesmen. Eventually reaching
the Zambezi, he hunted lion and lost a canoe to a hippopotamus. He
concludes with a chapter on rifles, and another reflecting earlier
sporting adventures after elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo and others".
Selous recounts much more than his hunting experiences, commenting upon
the people, agriculture, topography &c.

missionary William Threllfall who was murdered in Namaqualand, 1825.

biographical entries (probably over 1000) to which each subscriber was
entitled. These covered the Cape Colony & the Orange River Colony.
Groups of entries interspersed with reviews of various industries
(mainly agricultural), entries for 'A Hundred Years Ago', Constantia,
Claremont, the Cape Legislature, Deceased Public Men, Pioneers of the
Rand, index to entries and also to Members of the Cape Legislature.

Ciskei (4), Namibia (4), South Africa (6), Transkei (6), Venda (8), &
Zambia (1). Each in original envelope with descriptive card insert.

This lot sold on behalf of the Grahamstown Feral Cat Project. They
operate a 'Trap, neuter, &  release' policy and money realised from this
sale will go to the veterinary account for sterilisation procedures.
They also feed the many feral cat communities all over the city.
