Copy No.33. Signed by Author and dated 31/8/1995 This is an extensive
scholarly work detailing the location, construction, and history of forts,
fortifications, posts, bridges, prisons, earthworks. watchtowers, guard
houses, hospitals, cemeteries, signal towers, roads etc. Effectively all
British military works & structures built in the Eastern Cape during the 19thC
are detailed here Illustrated with coloured photographs, maps, plans,
sketches. Numerous appendices, extensive list of sources. A major work on
South African military history.

Gilt title decorated red cloth boards. 695pp illustrated colour. 4to.

Signed 'W.W. Battiss 1929'. At this time Battis was probably in
Rustenburg.

#24469 Walter Battiss. FOOK ISLAND BANKNOTE

Pencil design on thin card for Fook Island 2 Aks banknote. 128mm x
72mm.undated.

The design features various pictorial elements, and the border is made up of
fooklore wording "fly to Fook Island on an albatross, come away by dolphin
...". Wording on rear reads "Prof. Walter Battis. Pretoria" in matching style
to that of signature on lot 27.

#22160 Major-General Francis W. Stubbs HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION, EQUIPMENT,
AND WAR SERVICES OF THE REGIMENT OF BENGAL ARTILLERY.

Henry S. King (Vols. 1 $ 2. & W.H. Allen (Vol. 3)., London., 1877, 1877, 1895. 

Authors own copies with his bookplate to Volume 1 and the following
inscription ffep: "Private copy for information and additions". The neat
correctional and informational annotations throughout the three volumes are in
the same hand, and appeared in a later printing. There are tipped-in new
handwritten paragraphs, tables, appendices, etc. Scarce anyway, this is a
unique set. Handwriting verified.

Combines a history of the country with accounts of the Author's travels and
work as a Weslyan missionary in Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechuanaland,
the Cape, also throughout Albany and Kaffraria. Includes much other
information, including a brief account of the missionary William
Threllfall who was murdered in Namaqualand, 1825.

Gilt on quarter black leather over green cloth boards top edge gilt, 630pages,
illustrated, 8vo., excellent custom dark green leather slipcase. No dust
wrapper as issued.

Copy No.445 of 1000. Signed by Nelson Mandela. Note that this limited edition
with the publisher's limitation page automatically carries an authentic
Mandela signature. There is no need for so-called 'authentication
certificates' as offered with many of the standard editions purportedly signed
by Mandela. This is a genuine Mandela signature, there is no way it could be
otherwise.
