        After completing his engineering apprenticeship,
      Richard Paver emigrated to the Eastern Cape in 1843.
      He worked on the watermills at Sidbury and Glenthorn
      before entering into an agreement with Sir Andries
      Stockenstrom to erect a mill at Maasstroom. His
      reminiscences, written about forty years later, deal
      largely with his experiences during the Frontier wars
      which ensued. In 1846 he was a member of the burgher
      force which, under Stockenstrom's command, cleared
      the Amatolas before striking out across the Kei
      River. After war had broken out again at the end of
      1850, he and his brother Henry remained at Maasstrom,
      attempting to defend the position until it was
      destroyed by fire eight months later. Paver's
      reminiscences provide vivid insight into a
      little-known and contentious phase in the history of
      the Eastern Cape frontier.

      chain of mission stations stretching from the Eastern
      Cape to Natal.

        Evidence of prehistoric coastal exploitation at the
      Duiker Eiland farm was investigated during 1975 as
      part of a study of coastal settlement in the western
      Cape during the latter part of the Holocene. Other
      excavated sites in this region are Elands Bay Cave,
      Paternoster, and Stofbergsfontein. This report
      describes the material recovered from Duiker Island
      but does not attempt an overall synthesis of coastal
      settlement in the western Cape. Discussion is
      focussed on the diet of the site's inhabitants, the
      season at which occupation took place. and on the
      function and age of the stone features found in
      association with the shell midden.

        Noted on rear, "Capt Lake's letter to Mr Moodie
      desiring him not to proceed to sea in the Gibralter
      who intended to sail for London but to so rule the
      Dukes orders. This was wrote in Cromarty Road 15 May
      1746". The letter notes: " ... it being desired that
      you shall be employ'd on a particular service".

high x 255mm wide, written 3 sides. Complete, stained, tears and
chips, crumpled along edges in some places, and loss to edge of
rear sheet which does affect the legibility of text in the last
paragraph of the letter. Overall only in fair condition but
estimated that 95% of the text is clearly legible.

        This is a copy of a letter, with a note by S.B.
      Venning, originally from W.A Turner to S.B. Venning
      concerning the affairs of Benjamin Moodie and
      forwarded to him on 20 July 1830. S.B. Venning was
      the merchant in Cape Town that Benjamin Moodie had a
      contract with to supply grain via Port Beaufort. The
      letter again concerns the debts of the Moodies, which
      may be finally resolved with a pending action against
      Lord Dundas for return of over-payments made by James
      Moodie for Superior Duties from the Estate of
      Melsetter prior to sale of said estate. Images and

      a Hottentot Captain and the fort itself was
