Hello,

These consist of a collection of original autograph letters signed from
Thomas Pringle and John Fairbairn.

Thomas Pringle is remembered as South Africa's most famous poet, and
beyond that as the Secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society in London
where his efforts ended slavery in all territories administered by the
British.

John Fairbairn is likewise remembered, but as the champion of press
freedom at the Cape under the Governorship of Lord Charles Somerset. He
was also an educator, a politician, he took a leading hand in preventing
the Cape being turned into a penal colony and was the founder and
first Chairman of the Old Mutual.

Lot 26.
An autograph letter signed, from John Pringle dated Cape Town,
26th January 1926. This was written only weeks before his return to
England.

Lot 27.
A collection of 8 autograph letters signed, from John Fairairn, dated
Cape Town over the period 1825 to 1828. These letters cover a wide
range of matters concerning the major issues in his life at the time,
chiefly of course the friction with Lord Charles Somerset over the
publications of which he and Pringle were editors, and much more.

Lot 28.
Two letters written by Fairbairn prior to his leaving for South Afica.
One of these is dated 1816, a period of his life about which little
certain is known, and places him in London. The second letter mentions
his plans to leave England and we see that he was considering New South
Wales and the West Indies and had thus not yet agreed to Pringle's
requests to join him at the Cape.

Lot 29.
Notes for presentation to a Commission of Inquiry in Uitenhage 1823.

The auction preview commenced yesterday, Thursday 7th November and
