I suspect that this is the infamous anti-aliased fonts compiled into the qtlibraries bug. Suffered from this one myself. If you go to the Texstar repository off of http://pclinuxonline.com site, you should be able to download a fix for this issue which will remove the AA fonts from the qt libraries and enable tightvnc to work.
