Yeah, but if I log in at the console as any user and type "startx", KDE 3.0.1 loads beautifully.
If I log in as root and issue a "/etc/init.d/dm restart" it says: Stopping dm [FAILED] Starting dm [OK] and then it loads kdm and users and can log in and go about their business. I then switch back to C-A-F1 and exit root. The problem to me seems to be something in dm. It's bombing on boot, but can be restarted to work fine? Does that make sense to anybody? The problem is temporarily solved by changed my preferred dm to gdm instead of kdm. It's just a spot to login after all and gdm doesn't bomb out on boot. I notice you have only 1MB onboard video. Some Compaq machines have a bios setting where you can assign more ram to the onboard video solution. From the sound of your problem, I would think only 1MB assigned to video is preventing X and KDE from loading, and it has to revert to the konsole display.
