Hans, I wouldn't recommend doing it as an upgrade from even 8.1 to 8.2 upgrades tend to cause more problems than they solve. However if your /home directory is on a separate partition. Then re-install to the /boot / or whatever other partitions you have. Save off config files that are really important and can't be easily retyped (httpd config files samba e-mail aliases etc etc.) and then put them back after the re-install.
