Hi All,

I am having a bad week with devfs. I am running 8.1, stock kernel but most
security updates in place for packages I run.

My HP Colorado 14GB IDE tape unit does not get a correct dev.

I have the 'append devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi' option in lilo which boots with
no errors. My problem is that /dev/st0 links to /bin/mt as do all other
/dev/mt, and the hosts branches under /dev/ide and /dev/scsi. I have tried
removing all other IDE devices onto another controller card leaving the only
the Colorado on the motherboard IDE2 cable as Master (and tried Slave) but I
do not get the links. The tar command just says the (tar -tvf /dev/st0 ...)
the file is not a valid tar file...which is true as it links to /bin/mt
which is a binary.

I have read the devfs docs, but I do not feel comfortable deleting data from
the /dev directory and using 'mknod' as I would have done in 8.0 etc. Is
'mknod' still valid in devfs?

I have posted this problem a couple of weeks ago but got no responses. Other
mailing lists have drawn a blank albeit not MDK ones.

I was hoping that Civileme may have a stab at this...please!

Thanks,
David.
