Disclaimer! _I am a newbie!_
Aside from that fact; I also got the pretty blue screen every time I tried the 
F1 but at the screen that gives you that option (angry and frustrated and ham 
fisted mistake) I accidentally hit the 3 and enter on the numeric keypad in 
nearly simultaneous fashion and got:
unknown command
and a 
boot: 
prompt where I was able to type rescue and commence to proceed. I have no idea 
why, and as stated I'm a lowly newb. But I hope it helps if it works for you 
too. 
I guess serendipity is really just happy accidents with a good outcome.
