600 is a far cry from the 12 connections open on the box. Are you familiar
with how Winbind interacts with Samba? Would switching to an alternate
authentication method alleviate some of the load on smbd? Winbind seems to
be only loosely related to the samba core components. I'm wondering that if
I was to eliminate the use of winbind if samba's cpu use might drop too.

Winbind was chosen in this case because we primarily run a Win2k network,
with authentication for most users done by the PDC. Linux is a new entrant
to the network.
