Hoyt, I did the same thing with my ASUS Mobo... after all the instructions from sensors-detect, was to put the following in some rc file and rc.local is an rc file. So far no trouble, and as I see it since rc.local doesn't rerun every time you change run level, less chance of a conflict or other problem.
