Since I was already running the Squid HTTP Proxy on my Linux (Mandrake, of
course :) box, I added the Sleezeball redirector program to it (go to
freshmeat.net and do a search for "sleezeball" to find it), which gets rid
of a LOT of the standard advertising site banners and so on. It's nice and
configurable, when I find new banners that are getting through, it's not
terribly hard to add them to the pattern match config file. I don't know
how much this will help with the kinds of pop-ups that you're running into,
but it's worth a look.
