You can try typing reset in the console window. 
That helped me in the past

it's strange that you experienced that problems from early versions,
i've never heard of such problems before... does it happen while
you are running a certain program, or it's a random crash?

if it's a program, please tell which one so i'll try it too..

as for the consoles,did you try by opening  a program that redraws
on the whole screen, like mc ?
