i never installed avifile, but i got similar errors if mplayer doesn't find SDL libs during ./configure check the source directory for avifile, there might me a "configure.log" or something like that. see if you can find any info in there. maybe you are missing/configure can't find something. oh and btw. have you tried different movie files? different formats?
