ok, so qt spent about 2 hours compiling...no errors.  now with gmake 
install...

rm -f /usr/local/qt/bin/qmake
ln -s /usr/local/qt/qmake/qmake /usr/local/qt/bin/qmake

cd qmake && gmake install
