I have a similar problem. I've got a USB serial interface with the FTDI 8U232AM USB to serial converter chipset and an external modem. I've been trying to get the modem to talk to the converter for a long time now; no progress. I can talk to the modem with minicom, but when I dial out, it starts the PPP connection and then just goes braindead. If I put it back on a standard 9 pin serial connect it works fine.
Seems to be an issue with the status of one of the serial lines. Sure do wish I could deactivate those wasteful standard serial ports.
