ok, I added .localdomain (home machine) to the localhost and now I'm
getting:

Access denied for user: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (Using password:
YES)

even though I've set my root user password with the following:

# mysqladmin -u root -p password '******'

one step forward, two back.  Also...
