Hi, Any Mandrake prepared kernel from www.rpmfind.net (search for 'kernel'), will be fine for 8.x I guess. Download it from there and install the rpm, it is the easiest way. Then say to lilo or grub where the kernel is, add a new entry and make it the default, it should be easy with the Mandrake control center.
(In www.kernel.org you will find the kernels ready to compile, if you want) I recommend you not to go for 2.4.8. I am quite happy with 2.4.13.
