Well actually I'm not having any problems with the pcmcia slots. They work
fine with Mandrake, even the cdrom-card and the xircom-network card
simultaniously (which gave win98 quircks).
The gsm I use now (alas, the one with the pcmcia got stolen) has a dierct
connection to the serial port with an internal hardmodem in the phone, making
it defacto an external modem. Using the 'Hayes' standard protocoll works fine
under with Slackware but doesn't give the response it should with Mandrake.
It probably is a resource conflict, but I can't find the difference in the
use of them tween Mdk and Slack at a first check. That's why I'm asking, it's
fairly time consuming re-installing again and again so I want to check as
much as possible beforehand.

In regards to Mdk8.1 install, I got a working install using the 'vgalo
expert' option but the result was s-l-o-w due to the 'overweight' kernel.
Using the second disk for an alternative kernel doesn't work straight out due
to the pcmcia cdrom needing a boot-floppy.
There are various ways to get around this methinks but as long as I don't get
the modem going it's not worth trying. It's the essential tool in my case
when I'm 'on the road' (actually rivers and canals) to keep in touch with my
home-network.
