Tomek, With only 4MB RAM, there is no way you are going to be able to run X Windows with Linux. If possible, I would recommend you upgrade to at least 8 MB, or 16 would be even better. If you can do that, then I would recommend you try an older version of Mandrake or RedHat, like around version 5.1 or 5.2.
