Have you changed the resolution or other settings related to mode lines? I guess there is some chance that doing so might actually be causing damage to your monitor. You may want to shut down your monitor or change back to a known safe setting. Can't give you good advice on exactly what to do or how to do it, just want to make sure you are aware of this possibility. How old is your monitor -- is it old enough that going south is a reasonable thing? The last thing you did was install a new XFree and now you have problems?
