Just for kicks, go ahead and install on Mandrake. The mplayer developers are VERY childish about having to accept that they believe gcc 2.96 is bad. On one install, I actually had to type something like "gcc 2.96 is no good" or something to that effect; before it would let me compile the program! Needless to say, it works just fine with gcc 2.96.
