Not only is my kernel panicking; I am panicking as well :-( Here's what happened:
I installed LM 8.1 yesterday. Today I tried to add a local printer. Just after starting the Printdrak procedure, the system became completely unresponsive, leaving me no option but to power down. When I powered back up, I received the following message partway through the boot sequence: Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. Until this happened, it had booted fine. I have no idea what changed, or why, but I'd really appreicate it if someone could tell me what I have to do to get a bootable system again. What I have tried so far (basically just floundering around): 1. tried to reinstall LM 8.1. Everything is fine until it tries to write the bootloader, at which point it says that it cannot write to the MBR. 2. Booted to the old kernel (for 8.0), ignored the bzillion error messages that arose because the application program configuration info is all for 8.1; executed lifo, which ran without complaint. Rebooting back into 8.1 still gives the same error, though. So I have rebooted back to a completely separate 7.2 installation on a different hard drive, just so I can get this message out. Doc PS Just when I was thinking that I had 8.1 under control, this had to happen :-( -------------------------------------------------------------- Phone: +1 303 494 0394 Mobile: +1 720 839 8462 Fax: +1 781 240 0527 --------------------------------------------------------------
